Doris Archer Motorsport’s Mel Higgins Celebrates Double Podium Success on Hot Hatch Championship Debut at Brands Hatch

Doris Archer Motorsport marked their championship debut in the 750 Motor Club PBS Hot Hatch Championship with a standout performance from driver Mel Higgins, securing two Class C podium finishes at the iconic Brands Hatch Indy Circuit.

On the 19th April 2026, in warm, dry conditions ideal for racing, Higgins delivered a composed and determined drive throughout the weekend in the team’s Citroën Saxo VTR, affectionately known as Addie, claiming 3rd in Class in Race 1 and an impressive 2nd in Class in Race 2.

The 750 Motor Club Hot Hatch Class C is widely regarded as one of the most competitive and entertaining categories, where maintaining speed, carrying corner momentum, and making decisive overtakes matter more than outright horsepower. Higgins’ double podium on her debut highlights her ability to maximise both car and circuit within these constraints. Class C is reserved for vehicles with a power-to-weight ratio of up to 145bhp per tonne.

A Spin, a Recovery, and a Class Trophy Earned the Hard Way

Starting from a qualifying position that reflected only her second visit to the circuit, Higgins’ first championship race began with steady, confident pace as she settled into the rhythm of the Indy circuit. Lap by lap she reeled in her Class C rivals.

Mid‑race drama struck at Paddock Hill Bend when fluid on the racing line caught several drivers out. Higgins was pitched into a sudden slide, but reacted instantly, recovering from the slide quickly to continue the chase. The moment cost time, but not composure.

From there, it became a measured fightback. Higgins rebuilt her pace, closed the gap, and executed a clean, controlled run to 3rd in Class C, securing her first trophy of the season on her championship debut.

Elbows Out: A Wheel‑to‑Wheel Battle for Second

Race 2 delivered one of the most exciting Class C battles of the day. Higgins engaged in a relentless back‑and‑forth fight with the #55 Corsa of David Measday, trading places at opposite ends of the circuit. Higgins repeatedly launched decisive moves up the inside into Clearways, while Measday countered with momentum through Paddock Hill Bend.

With full commitment and unwavering focus, Higgins pushed hard throughout the race, and when the fight finally broke apart, Higgins reset her attention to chasing down the class leader in the closing laps. Higgins secured a hard-earned 2nd in Class C – her second podium of the weekend, firmly announcing her arrival in the championship.

A Breakthrough Moment

Stepping onto the podium for the first time in the championship marked a milestone Higgins will not forget.

Mel Higgins: “Standing on that podium felt unreal. I’ve dreamed about moments like this, but actually holding the first trophy in my hand… I just stared at it in disbelief. The racing was intense, the battles were brilliant, and I loved every second of it.”

The team was supported in the garage by Lee, who oversaw the car throughout the weekend, and former Hot Hatch Class C Champion Will Bartup, who previously raced alongside the team at the 2025 750 Motor Club Birkett Relay – where Doris Archer Motorsport climbed from the back of the grid to finish 29th overall.

Team Reaction

Lee, Doris Archer Motorsport said: “Mel drove her heart out this weekend. She’s worked so hard for this, and seeing her take home two trophies on her championship debut was incredible. This is just the beginning of what looks to be a great year for her.”

Looking Ahead to Pembrey

The next round takes the team to Pembrey Circuit in Wales in May, a brand‑new track for Higgins. The goal: learn fast, push hard, and see if the momentum from the Brands Hatch weekend can continue.
